Navigating the Global IT Outage: A Call for Cyber-Resilience in Aviation

Yesterday, the world experienced one of the most significant IT outages in history, impacting countless industries, including (and especially) aviation.

The ripple effects were felt across the globe, grounding flights and disrupting operations, with potential financial losses reaching into the billions. This event starkly underscores our industry's dependence on IT, digital tools, and cybersecurity.

The outage stemmed from a global update of a cybersecurity system linked to Microsoft, proving that even a single incorrect update can halt our entire industry. As someone who’s far from being an IT engineer, this incident illuminates the critical importance of cybersecurity and cyber-resilience.

Despite an aircraft only needing "lift" to fly (I'm sure all the pilots out there remember the formula just as good as I do, right 😉), this IT glitch kept millions grounded, showing just how intertwined our operations have become with digital infrastructure.

This event coincides with EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency’s push for the implementation of Part-IS regulations. These regulations, though complex and challenging for many aviation organizations, are now more evidently crucial than ever. Alongside other digital threats like the skyrocketing occurrence of GPS spoofing, we face a multitude of modern challenges that require robust solutions.

I believe (and once again, this is my own personal position...) that it’s clear we need to prepare to proactively address and respond to such digital crises. For small businesses, keeping pace with the rapid technological advancements can be daunting (and being a freelancer myself, I know what I am talking about... It's daunting!). However, our ability to control and secure our digital world directly impacts safety.

We must prioritize building cyber-resilience into our systems, processes, and cultures, and this shouldn't just be related to massive new regulations that are hard to digest... This means investing in cybersecurity measures, training our teams, and developing robust contingency plans in a collaborative manner, especially for the smaller, yet essential businesses out there.

The future of aviation and our ability to ensure safe, seamless operations depend on it.
